Very nice tutorial on creating a realistic looking animated fire text.

1) Create a new file.

2) Press 'D' Key to resent the colors. Then fill the background with black color.

3) Choose White as your foreground color and type out your text using some thick font (think ones may not work) I used a font called "Magneto".

4) Then go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and use the settings shown below. (If you are prompted to rasterize the layer, choose 'yes')

5) then go to Filter > Distort > Ripple and use these settings

7) Go to Image > Mode > Grayscale. If you are prompted to discard color information, click okay.

8) Go to Image > Mode > Indexed Color.

9) Then, Go to Image > Mode > Color table. And choose "Black Body" from the drop down menu.

10) Then, go to Image > Mode and choose RGB color.

Now comes the important part. The following steps may not produce the best results for you. It needs some experience to get best possible result.

11) Take out the "Smudge Tool" and play around with your image to develop a flame on top. See what i have got :-

12) Duplicate the layer by pressing "Ctrl + J".

13) Go to Filter > Liquify. Choose the "Warp" tool and do some change over the top of your flame. This is what i got :-

14) Repeat steps 12 and 13 as many time as you want. The more times you repeat, the more natural your flame will look. I repeated 5 more times. So i have 6 layers in total.

15) Now switch over to ImageReady by clicking on the Button on the bottom of the toolbox.

16) Duplicate the first frame as many times as the number of layers you have. So i duplicated 5 times so that i have 6 frames in total.

17) In the first frame, make only the first layer visible and in the second layer make onlye the second layer visible. Follow the same for all layers you have. See below :
First Frame:

Second Frame:

18) Now add a delay of 0.1 seconds or whatever seems good and hit play.

My Result :
